ATTENTION BAND PARENTS - Right now is the time of year that many band students begin practicing less. They have had their first concert of the year so they begin practicing less. Please encourage your child to practice daily. Show them your support by signing their practice book on the last page where they have their assignment. They should be marking down the number of minutes that they practice each day. Thank you for your help and encouragement. They are doing well, but I do not want them to get the winter doldrums.

Band and Chorus

Ms. Rhonda Sunken

Band is not limited to only one type of person, anyone can join.  Even if you do not know how to play an instrument you can learn before joining.  To make it in band you need to be persistent.  If you are not you will probably want to quit soon after you join.

A band is a group of people that play different instruments at the same time to create a musical sound.  Some of the instruments that can be played in a band include the flute, clarinet, drums, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba and there are many many more.  There are different types of bands.  There is marching band, pep band, concert band, and jazz band.  In marching band, most instruments that can be carried can be played.  The music is limited to marching tempo music.  Usually the members of the band memorize the music and play it while marching down the street or in a parade.  Some schools with bigger bands may do formation marching.  The members of the band go out on a football field to play music while forming different formations.    In a concert band almost any instrument and almost any type of music can be played.  The music is memorized and is usually played for an audience’s enjoyment.  In pep band the instruments that are played are usually limited.  The members play music during half time to show their spirit for the home team.  The music played is usually short so more music can be played in a short time.  In jazz band the instruments are limited.  The music is also limited.  The music has a jazzy sound to it.

One can join a school band at any time if he or she knows how to play an instrument.  Most schools start students in band at fifth grade.  Usually before playing in the band the students take lessons to learn the instrument they want to play.  If someone has to change schools and wants to join the band at their new, school he/she can sign up.  If he/she does not know how to play an instrument yet he/she is encouraged to learn, they can take lessons and then join.
