Model Decimals (to hundredths)

Step 1:  Identify the marks between whole numbers

Step 2:  Find the two marks that Point B is between on the number line.

Step 3:  Compare Point B to the numbers in the list and answer the question.

The vertical marks in between the whole numbers are half, so between the 3 and the 4 the mark represents 3 ½ or 3.5. The mark between 4 and 5 would be 4 ½  or 4.5.   

Point B is between the numbers 4 ½  and 5.  

Compare to the numbers in the list:  5.2, 4.8, 4.3, or 3.8.  Point B best represents 4.8.

Example:  Which digit is in the thousandths place in the number 3,207.1854?

The digit 5 is in the thousandths place because it is 3 places after the decimal and 3 places after the decimal is the thousandths place.  

Which digit is in the ten thousandths place in the number 4,318.2967?

The digit 7 is in the ten thousandths place because it is 4 places after the decimal and the fourth place after the decimal is the ten thousandths place.
